You will be in Chti country, people who have recently been exposed to the eye of the world in the film “Bienvenue chez les Chti’s” which you might be interested to see. There is an English version. People are friendly there and have a strong sense of humour, which becomes apparent when you know them better. These old French Flemish towns have an interesting architecture when it has survived the assaults of two world wars and heavy bombardments. Lille is a cornucopia of culture, and a brilliant shopping centre. It is a major university town and a really vibrant city.
I have a very soft spot for Valenciennes which is also near by, and has an interesting history and a wonderful museum. One of my daughters who is a linguist was posted as an assistant in near-by Maubeuge to everyone’s consternation as we all thought “There is nothing in Maubeuge except for a song about the Clair de Lune” but she says it was the happiest year in her life, and she felt a hundred times more welcome in the North of France than she did when she moved to Paris. Another of my daughters was posted by her American firm to Lille and found the same thing, making many friends that she is still in touch with even though she is now in the USA.
You can hop over the border and go and explore Belgium as you will have a Schengen visa. Go and see Brugges, Bruxelles and Ghent. Brugges with its canals and medieval buildings is a World Heritage site and is absolutely fabulous. Its museums have amazing art treasures and the chocolate is to die for. Just remember that you are more likely to be treated nicely there and in Ghent if you speak English than if you speak French as they are very anti-French there even though they speak it. Bruxelles, being the capital, is more international because it is one of the EU administrative centres, so the French spoken there is somewhat colourful, but the heart of the city is beautiful and there are good art galleries and museums there too. The food is very fine in quaint little restaurants in narrow medieval streets. It is half-an-hour by train from Lille.
If you are interested in the wars, there are huge cemeteries in Northern France, such as Notre-Dame de Lorette where people from many nations are at rest, and the superb Canadian memorial at Vimy Ridge. Arras is also worth a visit with its two amazing huge Flemish squares.
Pack warm clothes if you are going for the winter as the winds sweeping the Flanders plain are bitter having started their journey in Russia.Take stout shoes or boots, scarves, gloves and head cover plus folding umbrella. I was there visiting family graves on the first of November and I was chilled to the bone. Spring and summer are pleasant there.
The Christmas season starts on the 6th December with the feast of Saint Nicolas, continues with Christmas and the New Year and it ends with “Le jour de Rois” on twelfth night. There also are amazing carnivals and each town has its own Giants which are paraded round the city. People there know how to party and the food is delicious.

Embarrased of my husband’s job?:/?

I am a very hard worker and I worked for a very long time to get the job I have.I am a Criminal Defense Lawyer.I make very good money and love what I do.I have been married to my husband for 5 years and I love him very much.He’s sweet and kind and he really cares about me and our daughter.My husband never went to college and he is a manager at pizza hut.I know he works hard but when my colleagues ask me what my husband do I usually will lie or change the subject.I make all the money in the household and I pay for everything.I drive a Lexus SUV and he drives a redpickupp truck.I’ve offered to buy him a better car but he won’t let me….he says that he has a job and he’ll pay for his own car.My parents also think that I’m better than him and I need a man with a better job,so do my friends.Am I wrong for feeling this way?:/

Well, like the couple of other’s have put it, tell them he is the manager of a restaurant, who knows may be he will have a restaurant of his own one day! But with your feelings of embarassment,outcast them and realise that they will have no place in love. I know a wife who is a doctor and her husband manages her clinic! Although it is understandable the way you feel, that you want your husband to be better than you financially, and it is also less of a stress on a woman when a man can take care of the finances, perhaps you can help him out, empower him, that is if he is interested, to get him his own restaurant or advice him about investing into real estate etc., so he will be better off financially.
I know few women who are filthy rich and they helped make a better career for their love / fiancee/ husbands. But if your husband doesnt want that, then appreciate him for what he does. Count all the posiitve things about him, that he loves you and your kid, spends time with you, that he is not out to get your money, doesnt cheat on you, has no inferiority complex ( i know a guy who suffers from it and doesnt let his wife work, he wants her to live only on what he makes). As far as your friends and parents, they may be looking at your financial aspect only or they may be as embarrassed as you are, but mention to them his positive aspects.
There is a husband who is a billionaire, takes care of everything, including the wife’s parents but hardly spends time with the wife, when he gets time off, he goes off with his friends to vacation to different countries. The wife complains to me that he doesnt spend enough time with her!
