New Yorkers: Join Us Mon., Oct. 30 To Kick Trans Fats Out of New York Restaurants

Unless you’ve been hiding out in a cave lately, you’ve probably heard about the horrific dangers of trans fats — partially hydrogenated vegetable oils found in processed cookies, cakes, crackers, breads, doughnuts, and deep-fried French fries, etc.– which can lead to an increased risk of coronary heart disease.
In fact, Harvard researchers believe that just getting rid of trans fats could prevent between 30,000 to 100,000 premature deaths annually, as they reported in the New England Journal of Medicine earlier this year.
Although in January this year, the FDA began requiring that all manufacturers label those potentially hazardous fats, eateries nationwide have been continuing to use the potentially deadly fat.
Now, nutrition-minded people who live or work in New York have a golden opportunity for their voices to be heard and to aid influence lawmakers so that trans fats will be given the boot from Manhattan restaurants.
On Monday, October 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (at 125 Worth Street, 2nd Floor, near City Hall), the New York City Board of Health’s Department of Well being and Mental Hygiene is holding public hearings to consider a Trans Fat Absolutely free NYC at Thomas Paine Park directly across from the Department of Wellness and Mental Hygiene. The goal is to show politicians that there’s a tremendous amount of support for this ban-trans-fat proposal.
If New York restaurants stop using trans fats, it will become the second city in the U.S. to do so, following the lead of the much vastly smaller city of Tiburon, in northern California, which now works with restaurant owners and managers in the area’s 18 restaurants to avoid trans fats in cooking oil or frying.

New York may perhaps require restaurants to disclose calorie content of food products

Tags:

The New York City department of well being recently proposed a new policy that would require some restaurants — mainly fast-food chains — to disclose calorie information on their menus.
If passed, the policy would only apply to restaurants that serve standard portions and already disclose calorie information on fliers or websites. Most fast-food chains are included in the proposed regulation, and New York officials estimate that the policy would apply to roughly a single out of every 10 restaurants.
Fast-food restaurants are opposed to the proposal, claiming it would penalize restaurants that already voluntarily disclose nutrition information — though not on menus.
John Whipple, president of the National Council of Chain Restaurants, called the proposal costly and possibly unconstitutional. In written testimony submitted to the New York City Board of Health, Whipple stated, “Restaurants should be encouraged in their health education efforts, not dissuaded from such effort by misplaced regulatory policies.”
However, New York City Wellness Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden said diners have a right to know what foods could contribute to potentially harmful weight gain.
Consumer Advocate Mike Adams, creator of “The Honest Food Guide,” stated restaurants oppose calorie disclosure on menus because most shoppers could be “utterly shocked” to learn how fattening their favorite restaurant foods are.
“This effort by the restaurant industry to keep the public ignorant of fundamental nutritional facts is nothing more than an attempt to protect their business interests at the expense of public health,” Adams said.
The New York City Board of Health is set to vote on the proposal in December. If passed, the new policy would go into effect in July 2007.

McDonald’s to reduce trans fat content of food in European chains by 2008

Tags:

On Tuesday, McDonald’s announced it could be cutting the level of trans fats in its cooking oil to 2 percent by 2008 in its European restaurants, and claimed it was the 1st fast food chain on the continent to do so.
After the move, more than 6,300 McDonald’s restaurants will sell food with less than 0.5 grams of trans fats per serving. This is good news for fast food customers, as trans fats have been linked to obesity, increased heart disease risk, and higher blood pressure.
The fast food giant made a similar promise for its U.S. restaurants in 2002, promising to reduce trans fats in products including Chicken McNuggets and french fries, but competitors Wendy’s International and KFC beat them to the no-trans-fat punch. Neither Wendy’s International nor KFC owner Yum Brands have commented about reducing trans fats in European outlets. McDonald’s President and Chief Operating Officer Ralph Alvarez said that the company had tried cooking its fries in the same trans-fat-free oil Wendy’s uses, but said it just didn’t work for McDonald’s products.
Still, McDonald’s will be replacing its current rapeseed and sunflower oils with an oil that balances high oleic rapeseed oil and/or high oleic sunflower oil to form 2-percent-trans-fat cooking oil. It will first be used in restaurants in Sweden, Norway and Finland, then its use will move across Europe. McDonald’s made no comment about using the oil in the United States. The FDA currently allows U.S. businesses to label their products free of trans fats if they contain less than 0.5 grams per serving, but European authorities do not allow such labeling.
“This TFA (trans fatty acid) reduction is part of our strategy to continuously improve the quality of our products and offer balanced choices to our customers,” stated group European president Denis Hennequin.

American Heart Association opposes New York trans fats ban

Tags:

The American Heart Association (AHA) recently came out in opposition of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposed ban on trans fats in the city’s restaurants, claiming the ban might force eateries to revert to oils high in unhealthy saturated fats.
“The American Heart Association is concerned that the ban of trans fat in restaurants in its current form might not be the best course of proposed action,” the AHA said in written testimony obtained by the New York Post.
Trans fats have been shown in a host of recent studies to raise “bad” LDL cholesterol levels and contribute to heart disease and other health disorders.
A broad range of medical groups — including the American College of Cardiology, the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Hypertension, the Medical Society of New York and the New York Academy of Medicine — have come out in support of Mayor Bloomberg’s ban, which would require most New York restaurants to eliminate trans fats from their menus by next July.
However, the AHA claims the ban doesn’t allow restaurants enough time to seek out healthy alternatives, which could force them to use high-saturated-fat oils for example palm or coconut oil.
“We are concerned that there is the prospective for unintended and adverse consequences, for example restaurants returning to the use of oils high in saturated or animal-based far if healthier oils are in short supply,” mentioned AHA representative Megan Lozito. “These unhealthy substitutes also pose important health risks.”
New York City Well being Commissioner Thomas Frieden stated plenty of healthier, option oils could be available.
Consumer well being advocate Mike Adams, author of “Poison In the Food: Hydrogenated Oils,” said the AHA is defending a substance that has been proven to harm human health.
“It is almost unimaginable that an organization claiming to support heart well being would not be entirely in favor of an outright ban on a substance that has been scientifically established as a danger to human wellness,” Adams said.
“It really makes you wonder whether the AHA has the best interests of the public in mind, or if it is favoring the interests of food corporations that pay the AHA money to license its logo,” he said.

New York becomes very first U.S. city to ban trans fats

Tags:

A unanimous vote from the New York City Board of Health has made the Big Apple the very first U.S. city to ban harmful trans fats from its restaurants.
First proposed on Sept. 26, the ban on using trans fats in restaurant cooking stirred up a hornets’ nest of positive and negative reactions, as proponents lent vociferous support for the move — going as far as to hold a rally across the street from where the proposal was considered in a public forum — while opponents maintained that trans fats were not dangerous in the small amounts used in restaurants.
Originally, the proposal gave restaurants six months to switch to oils, margarines and shortening that contain less than 0.5 gram of trans fat per serving, and 18 months to serve foods containing the same amount. Some felt that deadline was unrealistic, so the final ban requires restaurants to stop using trans fat cooking oils by July and then stop serving any foods containing trans fats by July 2008. The American Heart Association warned that giving restaurants too little time to make the switch could cause them to return to oils high in saturated fats, which are considered less harmful than trans fats, but can still increase the risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.
Trans fats are created when hydrogen is added to liquid oils to transform them to solid fats, usually in order to increase a product’s shelf life, and are found in processed foods like pizza dough, cookies and pre-made pancake mix. According to FDA figures, the average American consumes 4.7 pounds of trans fats annually. Health advocates are celebrating the NYC ban because studies have shown that less than 5 grams a day of trans fats can raise heart disease risk by as much as 25 percent through the increase of LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and the simultaneous reduction of HDL (good) cholesterol levels.
“This is a great victory for the health of New York citizens,” stated Mike Adams, author of the books, “Poison in the Food: Hydrogenated Oils” and Grocery Warning.” “It sends a powerful message to fast food restaurants and food producers, warning them that we will no longer look the other way when it comes to dangerous, health-harming food ingredients.”

Fast food restaurants at children’s hospitals influence parents to feed their families unhealthy meals

Tags:

New research states that at least 59 of the nation’s 250 children’s hospitals have fast-food restaurants as part of their cafeteria operations. According to Dr. Hannah Sahud — the lead researcher behind the new study — that is a troubling phenomenon, particularly given rising obesity rates.
Dr. Sahud stated “We’re giving two different messages by being in the health care profession and promoting health and saying obesity is a huge medical problem … and then implicitly encouraging it.”
At this time, about 17 percent of U.S. children are considered obese — and lots of doctors think heavy consumption of calorie-laden fatty fast food is partly to blame. Dr. Sahud and her associates conducted recent research while at Chicago’s Children’s Memorial Hospital. That particular hospital has a single McDonald’s inside and another across the street.
Sahud’s research concluded that parents of children who got outpatient treatment at Children’s Memorial were much more likely to buy McDonald’s food on the day their youngsters were treated than parents of kids treated at Chicago-area hospitals without McDonald’s. Upon seeing the final results that parents of hospitalized children thought the nearby food was actually healthy, Dr. Sahud stated “I was shocked … that they actually perceive it to be healthier.”
“Hospitals should be walking the walk, not just talking the talk,” stated Dr. Sarah Barlow, an obesity specialist at Saint Louis University and Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.
Children’s Memorial spokeswoman Julie Pesch mentioned the hospital chose McDonald’s quite a few years ago as a special treat for sick kids going through difficult treatment.
